The Inner Game of Tennis shows us how letting go of ego and trusting your innate abilities is key to your improvement and success.  Stop telling yourself what to do!  Just let yourself behave how it thinks it should.  Observe yourself nonjudgmentally.  In order to improve, one must be able to observe how they are currently functioning.  It's okay to not be perfect (no one it) or make a mistake (everyone does).. but you must be able to observe and evaluate your own imperfections and mistakes to change them.

Inner game of tennis. 

  1. Reflections in the Mental Side of Tennis: People play best when in the zone, not affected by over thinking or even thinking at all.  Mastering the art of effortless concentration is invaluable in whatever you set your mind to. 
  2. The Discovery of the Two Selves: the teller (self 1) needs to trust the doer (self 2).  The difference between trying hard (self 1) and effort to complete the task (self 2)
  3. Quieting Self 1: non-judgemental awareness. The first step is to see things as they are, not judged as good or bad. Acknowledgment of and respect for one’s capabilities Support trust and self 2. Self 1’s judgments, on the other hand, attempt to manipulate and undermine that trust.
  4. Trusting Self 2: letting it happen is not making it happen or trying to hard. Let it happen, or if you don’t know how the. LET IT LEARN. Letting go of judgements, the art of creating images, and “letting it happen” are three basic skills in the Inner Game. 4th is concentration (diff chapter)
  5. Discovering Technique: no teacher is greater than ones own experience 
  6. Changing Habits: no need to fight old habits, start new ones. Step 1) observe existing behavior nonjudgmentally. step 2) Picture the desired outcome. 3) let it happen! trust self 2. 4) nonjudgmental observation of results leading to continuing observation and learning 
  7. Concentration - Learning to Focus: live in the now. Distractions of the past and future take our attention away from what we really want to “focus” on
  8. Games People Play on the Court: GOOD-O: perfect-o how good can I get? Compete-o To Win against others. Image-o so I look good? FRIENDS-O: status-o where and who you play with us important. Togetherness-o to make/have friends. Husband-o/wife-o to be with significant other. HEALTH-O/FUN-O: health-o to be healthy. Fun-o to only have fun. learn-o to learn. 
  9. The Meaning Of Competition: competition can drive people to do great things but also pit people against each other. One wins and one HAS to lose. Competition is more overcoming the obstacles an opponent throws at you to prove your true potential. Your job is to bring the best out in them too. 
  10. The Inner Game Off The Court: the Inner Game can help in every part of life. Trust yourself and tap into your bodies innate ability to learn and perform.
